Reporting

Save and manage reports

Save changes into a report or as a new one, discard them, switch between reports, start a new report or one from a template, change a report's settings, and duplicate or delete it.

A saved report stores one definition: its grouping, filter, date range, chart, granularity, measure and what it counts, with the settings in Settings. Opening it recomputes the figures for that definition, so the same report gives the same answer wherever it appears. Every change you make on the report's page is an unsaved draft over that definition until you save or discard it.

Before you start

  • Saving, changing settings, duplicating and deleting reports needs the Editor team role in a workspace your team can edit. Every team role can open reports and explore them. See Access model.
  • Change the report on its page first; see Explore cost data.

Switch reports

The report's title is a switcher. Select it to list every report of the workspace: the default report first, marked Default, then each report filed in a folder under that folder's name. Type under "Search reports" to narrow the list; with no match it says "No matching report". New report at the end starts a new report. You can also find a report by name in the command palette (Cost reports overview).

A saved report with Compare to previous period on.

A saved report's header holds Print, Schedule and Share, and beside them More actions with Duplicate, Settings, Create alert and Delete, and on the default report Save as workspace default. The default report has no Delete.

Save changes

As soon as the page differs from the saved report, the header shows Unsaved changes with Save changes, Save as new and Discard.

  1. Change the report on its page: date range, groupings, filter, granularity, chart, measure or Options.
  2. Select Save changes. "Cost report updated" confirms it, and the page shows the saved report again.

Save changes saves everything the page shows into the open report, the filter included.

Save as a new report

  1. Change the report on its page.
  2. Select Save as new. Save as a new report asks only for a Title.
  3. Select Save report. "Cost report saved" confirms it, and the new report opens. The report you started from keeps its saved definition.

The new report takes everything the page shows, and the forecast, unit cost and fixed comparison range of the report you started from; change them in its Settings. A report has a title and no description.

Discard changes

Select Discard to return to the saved report. The page address holds the draft, so a copied link, the browser's Back and a reload keep it until you save or discard it.

While a draft exists, Share, Schedule and Save as workspace default are disabled with "Save your changes first", because they act on the saved report. A member who cannot change the report can still explore a draft, but Save changes and Save as new are disabled and say why, such as "You can view this report but not change it."

Start a new report

  1. Select the report's title and choose New report.
  2. The new report starts from the workspace's report defaults, grouped by Service and without a filter. Change it on the page.
  3. Select Save as report, enter a Title and select Save report. The saved report opens.

A new report has no Share, Schedule, Duplicate, Settings or Delete until it is saved.

Start from a template

  1. Select the report's title and choose From a template.
  2. Start from a template lists the templates for every provider under All providers, then, under each provider the workspace's connections read, the templates for that provider alone, such as "Amazon Web Services compute by SKU".
  3. Select a template. It opens as a new report with its numbers, unsaved.
  4. Change it on the page if you like, then select Save as report. The Title is the template's name in your language; change it if you like and select Save report.

The Start from a template dialog with the templates for all providers and those for Amazon Web Services

The templates for all providers, then those for each provider the workspace reads, starting with Amazon Web Services.

The four service templates read the FOCUS service category every connection maps its services to. They and Commitment usage are also offered for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform alone, when the workspace reads that provider. Each money switch a template does not set counts what the workspace's report defaults count. Only members who can create reports see From a template.

Change a report's settings

  1. Open the report, open More actions and choose Settings.
  2. In Report settings, change any of the fields below.
  3. Select Save changes. "Cost report updated" confirms it.

Settings holds what the page has no control for, and saves it straight into the report, apart from any unsaved changes on the page:

  • Title.
  • Show forecast draws a dashed "Forecast" line with its range over the part of the report's range still to come and the last days whose cost is still arriving. Providers deliver cost a day or two late, so the last two days always count as still arriving, and so does every day after the report's data-through date, up to a week back. Each point is that period's cost so far, with each day still arriving or to come counted at the larger of its cost so far and its forecast. The forecast is made service by service from the 12 weeks of the report's own cost before the days still arriving: each service's level, trend and weekday pattern, added together. A service with less than two weeks of cost is forecast at its average daily cost. The range is how far that forecast missed the report's daily cost over those weeks. A range that ends by today or fewer than 14 days with cost show no forecast, and neither does a Measure of Usage or Count. With Currency conversion off (Currency settings), a report whose range or last 12 weeks are not all billed in one currency shows no forecast either. A table or pie chart draws no forecast; the Public API still returns it.
  • Unit cost: a business metric whose cost per unit the report charts beside its cost, on a second axis, and Count only these labels for a metric with label columns; None charts cost alone. See Unit costs.
  • Compare with, shown when the saved report has Compare to previous period on: a fixed range to compare with instead of the period just before the report's. Use the previous period clears it. On a dashboard, a report compares with the period just before the dashboard's dates, even with Compare with set.

The workspace's default report

Every workspace starts with one unfiltered report named for it, marked Default and listed first in the switcher. Cost reports opens on it. It has no Delete.

Whoever may change the workspace's settings sees Save as workspace default under its More actions: its date range, granularity, Options switches and Show forecast become what every new report starts from. The item is unavailable, with the reason beneath it, while the report has unsaved changes, while it already matches the workspace defaults ("These are already the workspace defaults"), and for a "Custom range" ("Choose a relative date range to save it as the workspace default"), because a default moves with the calendar.

Duplicate a report

Open More actions in the report's header and choose Duplicate. The copy is named after the original with "(Copy)" added and has the report's saved definition, not its unsaved changes. "Cost report duplicated" confirms it and the copy opens.

Delete a report

Open More actions in the report's header, choose Delete and confirm in Delete cost report. This cannot be undone. Cost reports then opens the default report. A dashboard widget that showed the report then says "The cost report this widget shows was deleted.", and its share links open "Link unavailable".

How it behaves

  • A saved report recomputes its figures each time it is opened, a dashboard widget or a share link shows it, under your plan's cost history.
  • A report can be filed into a folder through the Public API; see Folders. The switcher then lists it under that folder.
  • The Public API changes a report's filter with filter, and removes it with clearFilter; see the API reference.
  • The Public API returns a report's forecast with its data in forecast.series, whatever its chart: one point per period, from the one holding the first day whose cost is still arriving to the end of the report's range, each with a date, amount, lowerBound and upperBound in the data's summary.currency. forecast is null when Show forecast is off or the report shows no forecast for a reason other than its chart; see the API reference.
